Every American should visit Pearl Harbor. I have been twice and the second time, I had a lump in my throat that would not cease. Being in that sacred place with my children (one of whom is a second class midshipman) who are all the age of many of the young men entombed there was almost more than my mother heart could bear. It is a somber, reverent experience that impresses upon you a sense of loss so great it is hard to fathom.
Franklin Roosevelt said, “those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them.” This Memorial Day, don’t forget. Give thanks that there are brave men and women who (despite knowing the risks when they enlist or are commissioned) step into the unknown any way to protect a way of life they may never return to enjoy.
